The $20-for-30 Travesty

Postby PhillipG » Wed Feb 10, 2010 10:54 pm

Greetings to all passionate smokers around Australia, aka China In Training.

First, let me start by saying I am a fairly light smoker (3 cigarettes per day), but not by choice. If I had the means to financially support more regular smoking, I would happily smoke my way through half a pack a day. I'm a full-time uni student who works 15-20 hours a week a Coles, which covers basic expenses as well as very few luxuries (forgive me if I'm coming across as a whinger, I'm content with being poor until graduation).

Now, I'm sure you're all aware of our fine government's plans to raise the price of a standard pack of 30 to $20. If this happens, smoking will no longer be an option for me. How is this fair? I can cope with not smoking in bars and restaurants, and I can even cope with receiving disgusted looks from all directions every time I reach for my pack of Marlboros. But soon I'm going to be an ex-smoker, unless I become desperate enough to explore the illegal tobacco market. Of course, once my time at uni ends and I (hopefully) begin working full-time, I may start again, but that's still an AWFUL lot to fork out for tobacco.

How is the impending price hike going to be affecting your beloved habit? I truly hope you guys won't be forced to quit like myself. The day smoking become extinct in Australia is the day we lose one of the most sublime cultural traditions the world has bestowed upon us.
