Hi Deb,
I was just reading your thoughts about the good QLD website and your remark 'Who are these people that pronounced passive smoke as a killer', reminded me to add via this reply, what I have long thought about that ridiculous claim...
There are many things other than cigarettes that produce smoke or vapours, some of them very toxic and potentially fatal, that ALL of us: smokers, non-smokers and children involuntarily ingest or breathe all day and everyday of our lives.
For example: the exhaust smoke from many thousands of motor vehicles that are choking the roads of Australian cities and still produce (to a somewhat lesser degree) large amounts of toxic carbon monoxide gas in less populated regional areas...
I know that’s obvious, but we all know that the use of this smoke has been used for many decades by thousands, possibly millions of unfortunate individuals as a simple but effective means to terminate their own lives.
My point is: has anyone ever heard of or read about any person using the so-called ‘deadly and toxic smoke’ from tobacco for a similar purpose?
Well I haven’t and I’m sure that if anyone ever tried to shut themselves inside a car with all of the windows wound up and lit say 100 cigarettes, 25 cigars and 10 pipes, the worst thing that would happen to that person would probably be very sore eyes and stinky clothing! NOT death.
They would not die from that type of smoke, yet if they connected a piece of garden hose to the exhaust pipe of the car with the other end of the hose placed inside the car, then started the car’s engine, they would most likely be dead within 5 minutes. Many cemeteries worldwide contain the graves of those unfortunates who have proved this as an effective way of bringing about their own death.
On the same side of the coin, if there was such a thing as a cigarette that instead of producing that horrible passive smoke of tobacco (that the QLD government has ruled our children under 16 must be protected from by declaring it illegal for anyone to smoke inside a motor vehicle where such a child is a passenger); produced the SAME smoke that is emitted from the exhaust pipe of any internal combustion engine, the smoker would be probably collapse DEAD on the floor after taking only ONE DRAG from such a cigarette!!!
BTW, I heard on the radio a few days ago that the cancer council are now pushing the government to have the age of the ‘child passenger’ raised to 18 years!
If the government REALLY did believe that the ‘passive smoke’ from cigarettes was as harmful as they purport it to be, then ALL internal combustion engines would have been banned long, long ago...
We ALL breathe THAT passive smoke, whether we want to or not and the governments have done NOTHING at all to stop anyone from generating it, as they have done to us regarding tobacco smoke.
Another question I often ask our foes is that if passive smoke really is harmful enough to cause diseases such as lung cancer, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, heart disease etc. that they claim it can, then WHY are they (the involuntary or ‘passive’ smokers) not addicted to this smoke??
I am addicted – totally and hopelessly hooked because when I was about 14 I took up smoking and by the time I left school and started working at about 17, found myself craving the bloody horrible little white sticks! Yet, at 52 years of age, have never had any of those diseases or suffered any ill health due to my relentless smoking habit... So if I haven’t yet ingested enough smoke to make me ill, but more than enough to become completely dependent on the smoke, then surely these ‘passive smokers’ (who have consumed enough second-hand smoke to make them dangerously ill) would need to rush out somewhere for their fix of passive smoke every 10 minutes! Or, more likely: have taken up smoking and joined us as ‘REAL’ smokers so they can have a full dose of smoke – not just the ‘watered down’ passive or ‘second-hand’ crap!
Whenever I put either of these two arguments to an anti-smoker I usually get either no response other than them going quiet and walking away or, occasionally some childish angry and defensive outburst

– because they know they’ve been effectively ‘snookered’...

Most of those anti-smokers as we are all well aware are righteous, proud sheep and hate being wrong!
